The City of Lawrence, KS is seeking to fill the position of Transit Planner II. The ideal candidate will contribute to the visionary, future-oriented perspective of Lawrence Transit.
100% - The Transit Planner II will have a firm grasp of the elements that constitute transit planning and operations and will perform complex and professional-level work. The position responsibilities include managing the bus stop amenities program and developing applications for annual competitive state and federal grants. The Transit Planner II will be responsible for analyzing operational and performance data, and identifying modifications for transit routes, bus stops, and transit schedules. This position prepares, presents and provides presentations to the Public Transit Advisory Committee, City Commission, neighborhood groups and/or other similar entities on various transit projects. The Transit Planner II will also provide information and assistance to other city/county departments, governing bodies, advisory committees, the business community, and the general public on transit planning and operations issues.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Qualifications - Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in transportation planning, urban design, landscape architecture, public administration, or a closely related field. Minimum of two to four years of increasingly responsible work experience in professional urban or transit planning is required. Four to five years’ professional planning experience is preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to translate current planning objectives and long-range planning goals into actionable goals, policies and strategies that can be successfully implemented. Experience using ArcGIS, MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, GTFS, and Remix software is desired, with technical skills in Excel, GIS, and GTFS being of critical importance. Communications skills are very important, as a significant portion of this job is communicating with the public in both large and small group scenarios and with other government officials involved in the transit planning process. This position requires proficiency in both written and oral presentations, as well as the ability to produce graphs, maps, and publisher-type planning documents for presentations and reports. The position requires the ability to staff committee meetings and successfully create agenda and minutes for those meetings. The successful candidate will pass the post-offer City background check, physical, and drug screen, and have a valid driver’s license.
