Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking an experienced civil engineer or transportation planning professional to serve as our statewide Director of Traffic Operations.
Traffic Operations is a subdivision under the Multimodal Development and Delivery (M2D2) organization and comprised of several different programs and functional areas. As the Director, you will influence agency initiatives broadly, providing vision, strategic leadership and oversight for all programs under the Traffic Operations Division. Your policy decisions will be innovative and strategic in nature, and resulting in practical solutions to improve the safety and efficiency of our integrated, multimodal transportation system.

At a minimum, the ideal candidate for this role will have:
Ten years' experience in Traffic Engineering, transportation system management and operations, transportation planning or related field;
Ten years' experience leading and managing transportation programs and/or agencies;
It is desirable that the candidate for this role also have:
A Bachelor or Masters of Science in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, and/or other related field of engineering; and
Professional Engineering License (registered in Washington State) or Transportation Planning certification
In addition to:
An extensive background in all areas of transportation and traffic engineering, methodology, as well as a strong background in leadership and management principles and skills
Thorough knowledge of organizational relationships to allow coordination of a diverse work unit and to bridge across a variety of departments and agencies
Thorough understanding of all organizations representing the many areas of the industry
Thorough understanding of public and private organizations and agencies with interests in Washington state transportation system operations and management
Experience working with legislative committees, and a thorough knowledge of different agencies' roles in the legislative arena
Strong leadership and human relations/interpersonal skills
WSDOT is the steward of a multi-modal transportation system and responsible for ensuring that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT is responsible for the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project. As the Department of Transportation, we also support alternatives to driving, such as public transportation, bicycles and pedestrian programs.
