Virginia Tech
The Charles E. Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Department Head. The CEE Department is home to 55 tenure-track faculty members, including several early career awardees, holders of endowed professorships, and National Academy members, as well as approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 625 undergraduate students. Disciplinary areas of specialization include Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources, Geotechnical Engineering, Land Development Design, Structural Engineering and Materials, and Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering. Major research facilities include the Baker Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory, the Murray Structures and Materials Laboratory and the English Geotechnical Laboratory on the Blacksburg campus; CEE also has the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, with four full-time faculty, graduate students and a large research staff focused on urban watershed management and indirect potable water reuse. The current annual departmental research expenditures exceed $14M. Both the graduate and undergraduate programs are consistently ranked in the top ten CEE programs nationally by USN&WR and ranked among the top 100 civil engineering departments globally. The CEE Department is looking for a distinguished leader with a broad and inclusive vision to meet the civil and environmental challenges of the future across the department’s mission areas of education, discovery and outreach. The ideal candidate should have a proven record to lead a complex organization, to leverage growth opportunities, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and diversity. The Department Head is expected to foster an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive. Equally important is the ability to provide effective departmental representation across the University, as well as foster strong relationships with industry representatives, government sponsors, alumni, and the CEE Alumni Board.
