THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA – SAN DIEGO, Department of Structural Engineering (http://structures.ucsd.edu) has opened a search for three adjunct faculty positions:
(1) Assistant Adjunct Professor in the area of GEOTECHNICAL EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING. The candidate should have demonstrated potential to achieve excellence in teaching, scholarship, and professional activity, and is expected to contribute to the research and teaching efforts of the department, bringing further practical insights into our academic environment. A strong record of accomplishments in research and practice is necessary. Hands-on experience in the area of large-scale experimentation is highly desirable.
(2) Adjunct Professor in the area of STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING AND PROGNOSIS. The candidate should have expertise in signal processing; system identification; structural control; structural protection against extreme events; and applications of the aforementioned methods for earthquake and civil engineering. A strong record of accomplishments in both theoretical developments and in large-scale experimental structural testing and field validation studies is necessary. A successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses supporting the structural health monitoring curriculum, develop an active and well-funded research program, and build interdisciplinary connections with other areas of the Department and University.
(3) Associate Adjunct Professor in the area of BRIDGE DESIGN. The candidate should have significant experience and accomplishments in structural engineering practice and design, especially in the design of bridge structures. Demonstrated ability and experience to teach undergraduate and graduate courses are important. Experience in large-scale experimental research is also desirable. A successful candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the Department.
Successful applicants are expected to be actively engaged in research programs and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department. The appointees will be supported by research grants if he or she is involved in research, or by MS growth incentive funds if the person teaches. The percentage time for the appointments will depend on the level of engagement in these activities. Salary is based on UC pay scales and market conditions commensurate with the level of appointment.
Basic qualifications: An earned doctoral degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely-related field is required at the time of application.
Preferred qualifications: Candidates with experience with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to diversity and inclusion.

The Department of Structural Engineering houses unparalleled large-scale testing facilities, including the NHERI@UCSD Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table, a blast simulation facility, a composite and aerospace structures laboratory, a geotechnical centrifuge, two 9-m deep soil pits for foundation testing, a rail defect testing facility, a high-bay structural systems laboratory, a structural components laboratory, a large Caltrans 6-DOF shake table for testing structural response modification devices (SRMD), and multiple non-destructive evaluation/structural health monitoring (NDE/SHM) laboratories.
